PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN

TITLE: BLACK, 2 THE FUTURE // 4 FUTURE REFERENCE* 
YEAR: 2020-2021
CONCEPT: 

4 Future Reference* is a project that explores Will Howell’s identity and the introspective space he has remained in for the past year. The first part of this project explores the history of the Black design aesthetic over the past 100 years in America in the form of a visual zine and coded website. The second part of the project takes these references as a starting point while reflecting on the current zeitgeist and year of isolation caused by COVID-19. Will’s next concept was to venture into new territory by designing a capsule collection of garments that would embody this year of COVID provoked isolation and self-reflection. Embedded in the design of the garments, contains subtle gems hinting at transparency in self and personal trauma healing. Will’s design process differed from previous projects by embarking on the notion of starting from zero and generating lists. Some of these themes embodied in this collection include therapy, music, time, reality, and escapism. Instead of displaying in a regular retail space, Will made the decision to have these garments on display in The MoMa along with a temporary curation which would allow further opportunity to dive into these personal references. Altogether, this project serves as an exploration of personal design aesthetics, as well as a public call to action. With the intention of acknowledging previous Black contributions in design, and showing through my own actions, how one might explore their personal design aesthetic by pulling from experience.

TITLE: STUDIO. -- SESSION 002 (2021) ADVERTISEMENT
YEAR: 2020-2021
CONCEPT: 

 

In the spring of 2020, Will was able to curate his first studio session alongside Alignment records teammate JAYXCHO in Brooklyn, New York. The ethos behind studio sessions was repurposed during the height of the global pandemic, to invite people from far and wide to engage in a night of laughter, dance, and a celebration of the arts coming out of isolation. With an understanding that music is a powerful tool that can allow people to escape from the darkness of reality, in June of 2021, Will will continue his DIY party series in New York with the intention of using music as a tool to bring people in a singular space where they can heal and experience music together again.

TITLE: SOUNDS & SWIM ADVERTISEMENT (2021)

CONCEPT: 

 

On Sunday July 11 from 6-11pm Create Your Mood entertainment will be joined by studio SWISH for their first annual SOUNDS & SWIM: a new celebration of fashion, music, and art. This unique experience will showcase all new swimwear & resort pieces by NYC based Jamaican designer, Edvin Thompson and his vogue featured label Theophilio. SOUNDS & SWIM aspires to provide a new experience focused towards highlighting young talent and the inclusion of black swim in a traditionally underrepresented industry. To finish the night and week of swim shows, these two fully independent creative agencies will team up for a memorable night of food & drink, sound, and performances.
